This is a guide to communicating* with your Agilent U1252A or U1251A and possibly others.

After purchasing one, I found myself dissatisfied with the Agilent DataLogger software. I was interested in a faster refresh and an option to show the current screen/measurements in a big display on my monitor. Additionally, I hated setting the serial port options every time, so I wrote my own program in C# to give me a large display for quick glance measurement readings while working on delicate equipment with fine probe points.

There appears (as of this time) to be no manual for the command architecture, so I used a serial port snooping program to begin reverse engineering the protocol. It turns out the DataLogger is querying STAT? and SYST:BATT? a million times- not very efficient.

Hopefully this will help others who wish to make full use of their relatively expensive meter. Feel free, and please do, contribute.

* NOTE: you'll need the U1173A USB IR optical / serial cable in order to communicate with the meter.
